Meet the senior cat, Dexter

A family from Utah originally went to Best Friends Animal Society to look for a young kitten to adopt, but the charming senior cat stole their hearts.

Dexter was definitely up there in age, and they knew he probably didn’t have much time left. That didn’t matter as they took a chance on the sweet old toothless cat and gave him one last home to live out his retirement.

Dexter moved into his new home and immediately connected with his new cat dad JJ by cuddled up to him. The two grew a strong bond instantly and JJ insisted on taking care of and feeding his new best friend.

Dexter would cuddle and purr everyday just to remind his new family how grateful he was to have his new home. While burrowing into their arms he would rub his head against them for hours on end and purr purr purr.

He also got along well with the other members of the family, even becoming the pack leader!

His dog pack not only looked up to him and but were very protective of Dexter. That’s probably because Dexter would give everyone unconditional love.

Like most cats, Dexter loved to talk and demand food at 4:30AM every morning. His meow would be very grumpy sounding, and you wouldn’t expect him to stop until he got what he wanted.

In typical cat fashion, he was of course the ruler of the house.

Dexter was as happy as a kitty could be.

He would go on to live two more wonderful years with his family before he left for greener pastures.

You may not be saving the world, but it will change that world for that cat.

While the kittens were only a little over a month old when they arrived at Kris’s home in Minneapolis in May 2021, their young lives had already gotten off to difficult starts. Their mother, who was a kitten herself, gave birth to them on a farm in Wisconsin, and she struggled to provide her offspring with the care they needed to thrive. “Another mom took the kittens but she had six of her own and the kittens were not doing well,” says Kris.

Fortunately, when Snapple started showing signs of cerebellar hypoplasia, a non-progressive neurological condition, Kris readily opened her home to him and his siblings. After all, not only did she have the time and space to help the cute tuxedo kitten and his litter mates, Kris also had experience caring for cats with neurological conditions. “My first special needs fosters were The Tippy Tuxies whom I adopted,” explains Kris. “After adopting them I have focused on fostering special needs kittens, especially those with CH or other neurological disorders.”

When Kris started fostering the four young felines, they were still being fed kitten formula from a bottle, so she began the process of weaning them and transitioning them to solid food. Also, while Snapple was the only one in the litter who had displayed any symptoms of cerebellar hypoplasia, Kris closely monitored his siblings for signs of CH, including head tremors and uncoordinated walking. “I got them weaned off a bottle and sure of being healthy and had the other three transferred so I could focus on Snapple’s care when they were around eight weeks old,” remembers Kris.

While Snapple originally appeared to have cerebellar hypoplasia, Kris noticed he had other symptoms that were uncharacteristic of the non-progressive neurological condition, which occurs in utero, often when a pregnant cat is exposed to a virus like feline panleukopenia. “His front legs were spastic, bent inward, and not overly functional,” says Kris, and a veterinary neurologist diagnosed Snapple with brain and cervical spinal cord disease, not CH. “He is wobbly with symptoms similar to cerebellar hypoplasia but his front leg mobility is severely affected and his back legs don’t always get accurate brain signals either.”

Unfortunately, the neurologist was not able to figure out the cause of Snapple’s condition, nor were they able to determine if it was non-progressive like cerebellar hypoplasia. However, Kris was informed by multiple vets that because of his impaired mobility, Snapple would not be able to have a good quality of life. “His care team at the rescue supported that view and the plan was to let him go,” remembers Kris, “but I wanted to take him home to spoil him for a few days.”

Determined to help make the most of Snapple’s remaining time, Kris created a “bucket list” and began taking him on adventures. However, it quickly became apparent that while Snapple was different, he was also extremely happy, so in July 2021, Kris stopped thinking about euthanasia, opting instead to get the fun-loving tuxedo kitten a cart to help him become more mobile. “His back legs have gotten stronger since using the cart and he has learned to push himself around a bit with his back legs,” says Kris.

In addition to racing around his home — and even outside under close supervision — in his cart, Snapple likes watching flies and birds, playing with toys, checking out flowers and plants, and playing with Natalie, his foster sister who is blind and has cerebellar hypoplasia. “He loves attention and adventures, he just needs help to be sure he has a happy and properly stimulated life,” says Kris. “He also loves being around people and going to social gatherings.”

Because Snapple needs regular attention and stimulation, Kris hopes to find him a forever home with someone who is retired, works from home, or would be able to bring him to work with them. Also, Snapple uses washable pee pads instead of a litter box, so his adopter would have to be willing and able to do laundry regularly, but he doesn’t require any assistance at meal times. “He eats independently from his feeding station,” explains Kris, “and when he’s done growing, he will need a custom cart that would be ergonomic, designed just for him and safer as well.”

It’s also important for Snapple’s adopter to be someone who will be an advocate for him, just as Kris has been since the moment she started fostering this very special cat. For Kris, Snapple’s care hasn’t been particularly difficult, but the emotional burden of making sure he has a good quality of life and isn’t suffering has occasionally been challenging, especially because euthanasia has been suggested multiple times. “With all the recommendations to let him go, I’m pretty sure he wouldn’t be around if he hadn’t landed with me or someone else with experience with special needs animals,” says Kris.

Fortunately, Snapple — who was rescued from a farm in Wisconsin when he was just a few weeks old — managed to make his way to Kris, and she is optimistic he will eventually find himself with a forever family who will focus on everything he can do, not everything he can’t. Kris is also hopeful Snapple will be adopted by people who, like her, consider him an inspiration, which shouldn’t be a problem, as she’s received lots of messages via social media from people all around the world, including individuals with cerebral palsy and multiple sclerosis, who admire his resilience and determination.

“I am so thankful he came to me so I could give him a chance to show myself and others his will to live and hopefully inspire others as well,” says Kris. “Snapple doesn’t live the typical life we expect and doesn’t have a lot of independence, but he is happy and appreciates the attention and care he receives. He has plenty of love to give and curiosity about life, just like every other cat.”

Meli liked the kitties from the very first day. One of the cats even followed her around whenever they went out for a walk. When the cat got sick, they brought him in, and he’s been part of their family ever since.

Every day they make it a point to take a long walk and feed around 30 stray cats. To top things off, Fay and Dionisis spay and neuter all the kitties they can trap and provide them with medical care so that every neighborhood cat can live a happy and healthy life.

They started casually feeding the stray cats around the neighborhood, and it soon became a responsibility. The feline word spread and the next thing they knew, many neighborhood cats marched in and joined the daily feedings.

Meli shares a special bond with every single cat they feed. The cats see her as their food provider, who feeds them three times a day.

All the cats comes running towards Meli when she comes.

99% of the cats in the neighborhood have been spayed/neutered.

The couple is doing everything they can to regulate the colony population, while also making sure the cats are well fed and have access to medical care.

The usual routine involves Meli greeting the cats with nose kisses, as her owners distribute the food.

She has helped socialize many stray cats that were once scared of people. The cats are simply drawn to her and just follow her every move.

Some of them are able to adapt to an indoor life and then be placed up for adoption.

The couple’s neighbors don’t always approve for what they do. But, their action has proven to keep the colony population under control while maintaining the neighborhood’s cleanliness.

“Some of the neighbors are understanding and accept our love for the animals and our need to care for them.”

They founded a rescue group named SCARS with a mission to rescue, spay/neuter local stray cats, and find them homes.

“We keep going. Unstoppable.”

Recently, a kitty was rushed to the vet after a fishbone got stuck on the roof of its mouth. From the pictures shared by @hudialfarich on Twitter, it can be seen that the cat was in discomfort. Fortunately, the vet managed to remove the bone before further damage could happen to the poor creature.

We can feed strays scraps but please remove any bones. It is painful to imagine the suffering that a cat has to go through if it accidentally swallowed a bone that will obviously damage its internal organs. So, please be more mindful when you want to feed cats, no matter whether it is your own or strays at the restaurant.

In an unexpected twist, the hedgehogs did find a surrogate mother, but this was was Musya, the cat, who can be seen feeding the babies in this extraordinary video:

The baby hedgehogs refused to be fed unnaturally, ie from a bottle or syringe. And since they were newborn, they were blind which meant they couldn’t fend for themselves. They were beginning to starve.

That was until Musya the cat stepped up and became a wet nurse to all the babies.

When eight baby hedgehogs lost their mother, newly born and in desperate need of milk and affection, their future looked worryingly uncertain. But the hoglets have found an unlikely wet-nurse in Musya the cat, who can be seen feeding the babies in bizarre video footage (pictured).

She still had milk left in her from taking care of some other foster kittens, and luckily, the baby spike balls took to her immediately.

But Musya didn’t stop there with her motherly duties, she also takes care of them at night.

Before their adoption the baby hedgehogs refused to be fed from a bottle or syringe and, still blind, were beginning to starve at Sadgorod Zoo in Vladivostok, southeastern Russia.

The ‘adoption’ seems to have gone smoothly with both parties happy, although Musya has been letting out a hiss when the babies are a bit too prickly.

The zoo was left with little choice but to try putting the mammals with a new mother. Musya still had milk left after taking care of foster kittens and the youngsters took to her immediately.

“The hedgehogs’ mother was hit on the head by a lawnmower. Her eight babies were left without a mother.

‘They didn’t eat on their own. After two days, the hedgehogs were becoming hungry,” said Alyona Asnovina who was observing the group.

Going the full hog: Musya not only feeds the hoglets, but also takes care of the babies at night.

She added: ‘I saw our cat Musya in the yard. I quickly grabbed her and put her by the baby hedgehogs.

‘Literally, after a couple of seconds they approached the cat, they understood at once what to do, having felt her warmth and the smell of milk.

‘Surprisingly, the cat also understood instantly what was expected of her. She lay down and fortunately, the hedgehogs began to nurse.’

“As I was passing by an electricity post I heard what I thought it was a bird. But I found it very strange since I could not see any bird and besides that it should be way too hot for a bird to be chirping around. So I went back and investigated. What I found was a kitty crying for help. It had his head stuck in the junction between the top side and the bottom side of the post. It was hanging only by his head. We have no idea how the hell did it get in that situation. It must have been there for a long time, since it barely had energy to cry. Its mouth was open wide, it did not close it. I only knew it was alive by its cry for help.”

“I called my parents and we decided we would not let the kitty rot in that place, so we asked for the help of the fireman…When they arrived the cat was standing still and not making any noise and they first told us that the cat must have died. We insisted that the cat was alive, so they poked it with a stick and for our relief it did cry again!”

“After the police arrived they took a giant machine from the firetruck that would pressure the top side of the electrical post to try and tilt it. It would be too dangerous to try and bust the whole thing since there could be an explosion (we never know).”

“A whole perimeter was set around the area so other cars would not bother us.”

“One of the fireman was so upset for the cat’s state, behing so still for so long, with such a hot weather, that he tried to give it water. And it did drink! We were so happy when this happened. Still, we didn’t know how to take it out.”

“Then someone had the idea to use the machine they previously used to tilt the post in the junction of the top and bottom instead of only on the top. After they did, BOOM, the post busted and there was just enough space left for the cat to be free!”

“As you can see it was already night when we took it out. The fireman stood in that place with 40+ºC for 3 HOURS to save a cat’s life. I’m so glad I had the luck of having these fireman to help. Some other type of people and they might not be willing to do it and just let the cat die.”

“My mother decided to take it home for the night…It hissed at us if we tried to approach it. It looked like a mad rat. My father started calling it Spock because of those big ears. My mother was saying that we would keep it for the night and then take it to a cat shelter. So it stayed the night in our porch until the next day.”

“Time for a bath. He was filthy from the oil we used to try and take him out, plus all the dirt from being a stray cat. The water took the dirt away and we realized he was a boy with golden hair!”

“My mother took SO MANY fleas out of him. Seeing my mother taking them one by one, so many, just made me feel sick. That poor cat should be itchy as hell.”

“This is him after the shower. My father kept telling us he was the ugliest cat he had ever seen…my mother did not send him to the cat’s shelter, where I insisted they would probably kill him after some days. So we kept Spock with us.”

We have probably all heard about the benefits of coffee, but I doubt anyone has ever thought it would save some lives.

Kendall Diwishch came across the three kittens frozen to the ground while at work, after stopping to investigate, he heard the sound of desperate meowing.

After a further look, he noticed that two of the three kittens’ tails were stuck, frozen into the ice on the ground.

Diwishch had to think on his feet, he immediately ran back to his car and picked up the only thing he had that could melt ice, a warm coffee.

He took it back to the abandoned kittens and began to pour it around their tails, and to his surprise, the kittens started drinking it!

Luckily they didn’t have enough to cause any negative effects.

After a little pull, Diwishch managed to free the poor kittens from the ice with no injuries or problems.

It’s certainly lucky that the three kittys were found, as it is suspected they were there all night, and surely wouldn’t have survived much longer.

It didn’t take long for the three kittens to find a new (warm) forever home where they could be taken care of and will never have to suffer the same fate again.

It’s no surprise that Diwisch’s story went viral on social media, and was picked up by multiple news outlets.

This meant he received lots and lots of offers to adopt the kittens.

What a beautiful story with a happy ending!

A couple that already had several animals in their family heard his cries and realized that they had to do something.

So they came on the weekend, hoping to gain the kitten’s trust when no one else was around. They brought plenty of kitten food and left out fresh water.

They did what they could to try and coax him from his hidey-hole and after a few few hours he tentatively appeared and walked up to his new human friends with his tail up.

This tiny kitten was so pleased that someone was feeding him that he kept eating until his belly was filled. The couple stayed close by, hoping that he would get used to them him as he slowly came out from his hiding place.

He looked into their eyes with an expression that appeared like he was saying thank you. Finally they managed to steer him into the cat carrier and made their way home.

“Everything is going to be ok now little one.”

They decided to name him Ollie and told him from now on everything was going to be okay.

He had spent a week crying and meowing in the warehouse, but he hasn’t stopped purring since he found his forever home.

UPDATE: Six months down the line and Ollie has grown into a beautiful kitty.

Ray Vargas was a self confessed dog lover until one night destiny came in the sound of a little kitten meowing outside his bedroom window. Upon investigation he discovered what was a tiny kitten whose eyes were still closed.

Ray explains:

“I found him on a rainy night, abandoned on the roof of the shed in my backyard. Just followed his meowing.”

The abandoned kitten appeared to be crying for his mother but she was nowhere to be found, Ray knew he had to help or the poor little guy wouldn’t have a fighting chance. “This little orphan did not appreciate being left out in the rain so I picked up a kitten feeder kit complete with formula and bottle.”

Ray brought the kitty in, warmed him up and fed him regularly throughout the night. Soon after, the little guy started eating more and Ray’s care started to pay off.

Vargas named him Bagheera and this is him with his eyes fully opened taking his first real look at the world.

He began to follow Ray around the house and quickly learned how to climb up onto his shoulder.

As he grew he realized his favorite place for a naps was in the arms of the man that saved him.

Ray is an artist and has discovered working from home is not so easy with a cat around! Here he is offering a helping paw.

“I had no idea that bringing in an abandoned newborn out of the rain that night would lead this avowed dog person to own my very first pet, a cat no less,” states Ray. “Best decision I ever made.” We’ll have to agree with you on that one Ray!

Megan Sorbara found the kittens when she was out for some ice cream.

Megan quickly noticed that the little white kitten could barely walk on her own. That was why her siblings were doing everything they could to keep her warm and comfortable.

Megan took the kittens back to Naples Cat Alliance, so they could get the necessary care. Most importantly, for the little white kitten who couldn’t walk.

“She has a very pronounced head tilt to the left, but she has a very healthy appetite and manages to roll to where she wants to go.”

The two Tabbies were named Praline and Pistachio, and their little sister Coconut Sorbara has been bottle feeding the babes around the clock. Even though the sister has been nursed back to health, her brothers still wrap around her to protect her.

They’re not working on find the mommy cat and get her reunited with her little ones.

“We have been back every night trying to get mom but she won’t go in the trap,” – Sorbara

“We have trapped at this location before and she has witnessed everyone else going in, so she is what we call trap shy.”

Bitsy, Sorbara’s dog and a huge cat lover, has taken to the little kittens and is volunteering to be their foster mom.

Sorbara’s dog, Bitsy, is believe it or not, a huge cat lover. Bitsy has fallen in love with the little kittens and is volunteering to be their foster mom.

Bitsy is helping Coconut get better every day. “She is getting stronger and is able to hold her head up straighter than even yesterday.”

She gained a lot more strength, and even returned some kisses and snuggles to her doggy caretaker. Bitsy encourages her to climb, stretch, and move around.

Sorbara and her team continue on their mission to find the mama so they can reunite in a safe place with good food, good care, and chance to have a real home.

“Even now they wrap around Coconut.” It’s the cutest thing.

As of now, the cat is 1 year and 4 months old. Her owner, Natalie, loves sharing some of the cutest photos of Mostaccioli on a dedicated Instagram account.

Meet Mostaccioli, a cat with a mustache

Natalie told that she found Mostaccioli when the kitty was only about a day old with her three brothers. She was the only one with a “mustache”. Natalie shared: “Mostaccioli’s mom was a tiny feral micro panther who was severely underweight. My mom was watering her garden when she heard kitten cries so she rushed to call me, and I found all four of them soaked. I dried and cleaned them up as quickly as I could, and tricked their feral mom to walk into the huge kennel so that I could take care of all of them under my supervision.

At first, I didn’t notice she had a mustache because I didn’t want to handle them much in their early days, and their mom would hiss and swipe at me when I would weigh them. Mostaccioli was struggling a bit so I started supplemental feeding with her to make sure she’d make it. When we noticed her mustache, I knew then she would be a foster fail for me. Two of her brothers were adopted together, and the other was adopted into a household that had a sweet old poodle for his brother.”

Mostaccioli seems to be pretty active on Instagram. We asked Natalie how she manages to take so many great pictures as cats are sometimes not in the mood for posing: “The best way that I can get my mustache girl’s attention for photos is to call her name or make a weird noise for her to look. My camera roll is filled with hundreds and hundreds of photos so that I can get at least a few good ones.”

Like most cats, Mostaccioli like to spend her time catching some z’s

According to Natalie, Mostaccioli is strictly an indoor cat: “I am an overprotective cat parent. She is so small and adorable that she would definitely get snatched up in a second.

She is an absolute love bug. Loves to cuddle, especially at nighttime, and she loves to talk back when spoken to. She’s super athletic when it comes to playtime, and is curious by nature. She’s super sweet and loves to say hello to everyone, and absolutely thrives with all the attention she gets.”

Mostaccioli also has a ‘sister’ Izanami and they share a special bond

Natalie seems overjoyed to have such a unique pet: “Sometimes when I wake up and look at her I can’t believe she can exist, and that I found her. I always thought that mustache cats existed only on the internet and that I would never actually meet one. I’m so grateful that she’s in my life, and I’m able to share her quirkiness with the world. People who meet her always ask if I painted her mustache on, which I always think is funny.

Her ‘sister’ Izanami is more reserved meeting new people, but they always say she’s super cute with her folded ears. Mostaccioli and Izanami are super bonded, and I’m thankful they get along so great. They’re only a few days apart in age so I think that’s part of the reason. My dad calls Mostaccioli Freddie Mercury and Izanami a raccoon.”
