The Russian invasion of Ukraine has been going on for nearly two months, displacing millions from their homes and causing thousands of civilian deaths. Our hearts continue to go out to all the Ukrainians affected by war.
But even amidst this tragedy, there have been signs of hope and resilience from the Ukrainian people. Despite everything, heroes have continued to help animals in need, and pets have been rescued from attacked cities.
That was the case recently, after one tiny kitten was saved from the rubble and given a second chance at life.
The Ukrainian city of Borodyanka, northwest of capital Kyiv, was among the worst-hit areas in the war: bombings by Russian forces have left the city in rubble with many civilians killed. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy said the situation in the city was “significantly more dreadful” than the widely-condemned massacre in Bucha, per Reuters.
Rescue teams have been going through the rubble in search of victims — but recently they discovered an unlikely survivor.
According to a post from the State Emergency Service of Ukraine, searchers found a “small but very loud kitten” in the rubble of a building in Borodyanka.
The kitten’s survival was miraculous. The SEC wrote that she was “lonely and frightened” but “really wanted to live,” holding on until she could be rescued.
They wrote that the kitten “pulled a ticket to a new life,” and is now living in the office of a medical rescuer from Kiev.
It’s amazing news, and a glimmer of hope amidst the city’s devastation.
The tiny kitten isn’t the only pet to be recovered from the rubble. An older cat was also saved in Borodyanka recently, and is now living safely in the Ukraine’s Ministry of Internal Affairs office.
In Donetsk, a puppy pulled from the rubble was reunited with his 77-year-old owner. And earlier this month, a heartwarming story of a lost Husky who reunited with his owner in Bucha went viral.
What great news. We’re glad this sweet kitten miraculously survived, providing a glimmer of hope during this atrocity.
Thank you to everyone who has continued to look after animals even during this difficult time. Please share this story to spread the good news.
